The Myth of Hades and Persephone

The rapist from down under. An explanation of why we have the different seasons like winter, spring, summer and fall. There are three different levels of interpreting this myth so that we can better understand the causes and effects this myth has on us, and the effects it has on the earth. Like our Natural, Social, and Psychological levels.

Demeter symbol has affects on us, like the natural level she is the giver of corn which is a item of food for us to live on and also gives us the different seasons of the earth. Which brings me to the social level in which she gives us plant life and the growth of plants. She is also a mother who deeply cares for her daughter’s safety and well-being. Which leads us to the psychological aspect of Demeter when she suffers for four months out of every year waiting for the return of her daughter. Which gives us winter during this time period and also the separation of the seasons.

Persephone plays an important role also. On a natural level she symbolizes new beginnings and new growth every year when she returns home from the under world. Where in the Social aspect she is a Queen of the underworld. But still holds on to her innocence as being a virgin and stay pure to ones self. Now leads us to her Psychological aspect of her having respect for her self in staying a virgin. But she experiences the loss of her mother because of a promise she made to Hades and the Pomegranate seed.

Now it brings us to the pomegranate seed and how it symbolizes her trust and promise to return to her husband every year for four months to be with him. Which shows us the social aspect in were she is giving her trust to him and is also giving ownership to Hades. Now it brings us to the Psychological level of how the pomegranate seed gives a sense of freedom to Persephone be Hades must release her to her mother in which Persephone feels comfort.

Hades is one of the symbols of the story that plays and important role because on a Natural level he is death but is also wealth, thief and his is also sneaky. Which on a social level leads to the criminal and evil level of this myth and how he is mischievous and can have what he wants. Which on a Psychological level he has dark desires and to protect him from all of this power. He has many things like his three headed dog name Cerberus and he has the River of Woe but he was rewarded with a princess as his queen.

This is an explanation of why we have different seasons on earth and also the bondage of marriage in our society today. So try and apply this story to your life so you can make wise decisions.
